Engineering Lead

You lead from the front. You oversee delivery within your product squad, by shaping an exceptional team and making the tough calls to ensure everyone is set up for success. You do write code, but most of your time is dedicated to empowering your team of engineers, guiding them to ship full-stack product features, which are prioritised and conceived in close collaboration with your Product Manager

What does success look like?

  • Your product is winning. Target outcomes are being met. Launch dates are being hit.
  • You are well synced with the Product Manager, Data Lead, and Designer. You know what experiments they’re considering, and what research they’re doing. They know to what extent the engineering team is on track.
  • Every engineer has a clear understanding of their tasks, and their broader significance.
  • Every engineer is clear on how they are developing their skills & career.
  • You engage very productively in system design conversations.
  • Team members feel encouraged to propose improvements, and often receive constructive feedback.

What will you do?

Processes

  • Assist the Product Manager in assessing the feasibility, complexity, scope, and scale of missions and tasks.
  • Oversee the technical roadmap of your team, building towards a clear technical vision.
  • Prioritize and assign bugs in collaboration with the Product Manager.
  • Coordinate with engineering managers and leads from other teams on joint projects.
  • Optimise the delivery processes within the engineering team.

Execution

  • Closely manage the team’s workload to focus on the highest priority items.
  • Make well-informed trade-offs.
  • Supervise the technical design of solutions.
  • Ensure that the code delivered is of high quality, scalable, reliable, and consistent with the technical vision.
  • Effectively estimate and size tasks to provide a clear view of the development effort.
  • Clearly communicate progress on delivery efforts to the broader company

Team

  • Mentor and develop junior engineers.
  • Identify and address gaps in delivery capacity.
  • Onboard new engineers into the team.
  • Promote career growth for engineers in your team.
  • Conduct performance reviews for engineers in your team.
  • Foster a positive, motivated, and enthusiastic engineering team.

What would make you a good fit?

  • You’re passionate about developing and growing people, with a proven history of doing so.
  • You’re really, really good at writing code yourself. You’ve always had an uncanny knack for it, and you’ve been doing it for years.
  • You’re on the pulse of all the new and shiny tools. But you are very deliberate and pragmatic about what makes sense in a given context (time, constraints, full set of problems).
  • You’ve got experience with agile software development practices.
  • You’re confident you can solve any problem yourself. But you often expedite the solution by reaching out to others.
  • You can work deftly across the stack – from the front to the back, all the way to the infrastructure.
  • You’ve got formidable architectural design chops. You understand all the common patterns.

Bonus Points:

  • You’ve got experience in a Team Lead or Engineering Manager role.
  • You’re got experience working with multiple tech stacks and frameworks in a production environment.
  • You’re really good at data analytics – answering nuanced quantitative questions by carving up raw data.
  • You’ve worked at a startup or scale-up.
