What is the purpose of a cornice?

  • The cornice is common in interiors where it is a type of moulding that runs along the top of interior walls.
  • It can assist with brightening a room by reflecting light into areas of shadow.
  • It can make small rooms seem larger by drawing the eye upwards.
  • Cornices can also be used to help conceal cracking that may occur along the join between walls and ceilings.

How do I choose the right cornice?

  • Consider ceiling height: A rule of thumb is that the higher the ceiling in a room, the bigger the cornice you can use. Large cornices used in a room with low ceilings will create an out of proportion effect and appear to shrink the room.
  • Buy enough cornice: A rule of thumb is that after measuring your project, to allow an extra 20% for wastage, mitring and to produce the best finish possible. It is usually necessary to throw short off-cuts away to get a professional looking finish.
  • Choose a timeless design: Either choose a plain style of plaster cornice or a design that has stood the test of time and both will look elegant and classy in 20 years' time.

Standard Outside Doors (Wood) to be replaced in Maids Room, Outside Toilet and Garage Side Door
in Tokai, Cape Town
Its a repairs job. I need minor repairs done on a bunk bed and shelving in a cupboard within the next 2 days
in Claremont, Cape Town
We are looking to replace an indoor door. The primary reason being that we want one that is more soundproof - it doesn’t need to be completely so, but current door is old and not fitted snugly, so fairly useless in stopping sound. We have found the existing door and frame is not standard and in fact the wall opening is slightly different sizes on each side. As a starting point we’d really like to get some advice on the best approach to take in replacing the door. The measurements from wall to wall (ie not including the frame) are: height - 214cm on one side, 212cm on the other side; width 104cm on one side and 96cm on the other side. Thanks
