Why do you need skirtings?

  • In short, skirting boards are necessary to form the junctions between the construction materials and hide untidy joins. They also protect the bottom of the wall from general wear and tear from foot traffic expected in a normal home (pets and children, for example).

Which type of skirting is best?

  • Plastic skirting boards, usually made from UPVC, are a lesser-known alternative to traditional wooden skirtings. Since they can be mass-produced more easily, plastic skirtings tend to be cheaper than their timber counterparts. Unfortunately, this can affect the quality of the final product – plastic is a less forgiving material than wood, so you may also experience problems if your wall is not perfectly flat.
  • Softwood skirting boards, although much cheaper than their hardwood counterparts are prone to warping with changes in humidity and temperature.
  • Hardwood skirting boards are more expensive than off-the-shelf skirting, but are also extremely durable. The main reason to choose hardwood skirtings is the aesthetic. They can be painted to match your room, but hardwood skirtings are best finished in a clear coat varnish that allows the grain to show through.

Hi Good morning. We have had a burst pipe in the ceiling which resulted in the ceiling caving in and a massive volume of water on our wooden floors in the bedroom and passage. We would like someone to come and assess the damage and fix and make good on the floors if necessary. We would also need them to look at our built in cupboards for the same reason. Many thanks and kind regards Mandi

needing a couple of odd-job cupboard door repairs 1) i want to replace current main bedroom cupboard doors with a sliding door (i have the door - but need some sliders to mount on, i think i can source if pros can't). 2) use the current cupboard doors as shelves 3) add some additional doors to mini-cupboards/storage shelves in the lounge. 4) install/modify some surfboard racks in the garage 5) mount a bar-counter top (already sourced) in an enclosed balcony. I'm guessing it would be a half-day job (or full day job if i had to do it DIY - just difficult for me to do alone and during the week, as I have a day job & since it's an apartment cannot do noise-making work over the weekend). thanks Mike
