How much does it cost to install a fireplace?

  • There is nothing better than snuggling up in front of a fireplace on a cold, winter day. It is no wonder then that fireplaces have become a key element in modern homes today – they can be used to generate heat, and create an inviting ambience. Here we give a breakdown of the costs involved in a fireplace installation in South Africa:
  • How much does it cost to install a fireplace in South Africa??

Types of Wood-burning Fireplaces

  • Open Hearth Fireplaces: A classic option, open hearth fireplaces offer the traditional feel of a wood-burning fire. They are typically built into the wall, often with brick or stone surrounds, but can be less efficient due to heat loss through the chimney.
  • Closed Combustion Fireplaces: These fireplaces have glass doors that close off the firebox, improving heat efficiency by reducing air loss. Closed combustion units can heat larger spaces while consuming less wood and producing less smoke.
  • Freestanding Wood Stoves: Compact and highly efficient, freestanding wood stoves are often installed in modern homes for their ability to heat spaces effectively. They radiate heat from all sides, making them great for warming up an entire room.
  • Insert Fireplaces: Insert fireplaces are designed to be fitted into an existing open hearth, converting it into a more efficient heating system. They use less wood and distribute heat better while maintaining the traditional fireplace aesthetic.
  • Double-Sided Fireplaces: These fireplaces are built into a wall with two open sides, allowing them to heat two adjoining rooms simultaneously. They are perfect for open-plan homes and provide a beautiful visual connection between spaces.

Types Gas Fireplaces

  • Built-In Gas Fireplaces: Installed flush with the wall, these fireplaces provide a sleek, modern look. They are clean-burning and convenient, requiring no chimney or flue. Built-in gas fireplaces are controlled easily with a remote or thermostat.
  • Freestanding Gas Fireplaces: Similar to wood-burning freestanding stoves, these units can be placed anywhere in the home where gas access is available. They offer flexibility in installation and are efficient in heating small to medium-sized rooms.
  • Vent-Free Gas Fireplaces: Vent-free fireplaces don’t require a chimney or flue, making them ideal for homes where traditional venting is not possible. They are energy-efficient and work well in homes with limited space.
  • Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces: These fireplaces vent directly outside through a wall, making them more efficient and safer. They draw air from outside for combustion, reducing the risk of indoor air pollution and moisture buildup.
  • Double-Sided Gas Fireplaces: Like their wood-burning counterparts, double-sided gas fireplaces are designed to heat two rooms at once. They provide a modern, seamless design and work well in open-plan homes or as a feature between living spaces.

Double story house. Fireplace hole with pipe installed already when house was built -pipe installed through concrete slab of upper level which does not have an out pipe yet from main bedroom upstairs to exit house through upstairs walls/roof. Fireplace to be installed downstairs but flute pipe to go out upstairs walls/roof. Upstairs walls consists of light steel frame and insolulation, bottom walls consist of brick. Would love an open fireplace but would appreciate comments and recommendations. Currently have anthracite heater that needs repairing, if it’s better to have that repaired and installed as opposed to open fire place- don’t have open free standing fireplace- open to recommendations.
