What is wall cladding?

Wall cladding is a type of decorative covering intended to make a wall look like it’s made of a different sort of material than it actually is.
Wall cladding is also known for being a protective material which is attached to the exterior side of a wall of a house or any other building.
Builders have been using this technique for decades, because you can often achieve the luxurious finish of a more expensive material, while using less of the material or by using an imitation.

The Common Types of Wall Cladding

There are a variety of different styles that builders tend to use.
One of the most popular styles is known as ‘shiplap’ or ‘double shiplap’. The profile of each board overlaps the adjacent board which creates an attractive shadow line whilst helping with water run-off.
Another common type of wall cladding is ‘weatherboard’ which is also known as ‘featheredge’ cladding. This type was made from timber originally, but is now often made from other materials such as PVC or even Fibre Cement. This specific type of wall cladding is often designed with the look and feel of wood which results in low maintenance and serves as a long-lasting alternative to timber.
Natural stone wall cladding is also a popular finish.
