5 Top Renovation Tips

  • Get permissions - before you even think of laying a brick make sure you have the necessary approvals and permissions from your local city council to do any type of renovations. The last thing you want to do is get halfway through the project only to be told you have to stop or tear it down.
  • Do your research - search the web for ideas and inspiration for your renovations so that the renovation Pro will have a good idea of what you want.
  • Set a realistic budget - chat to your renovation expert before you hire then and work out what your initial budget it. Run through the entire project with your renovator to make sure that the budget you have set is a realistic one and that you can achieve the result you want within the budget you have.
  • Expect the unexpected - without fail, there will be unexpected problems that arise or expenses that you need to pay for so make sure you have set aside at least 10% of your budget so you can afford all of the unexpected expenses that you’ll encounter along the way.
  • Stick to your schedule - when you’re working out your budget with a renovator make sure you also discuss the work schedule. Renovations are known for taking longer than expected so before you start, set up a schedule and make sure your renovator communicates regularly with you so you’re aware of the renovation progress at all times. Projects than run over schedule will inevitably cost you more money.

+- 70-80 Sqm one bedroom one bathroom apartment in seapoint. Looking to convert an enclosed space old fashioned apartment to open plan with some structural changes and removing internal walls if possible. Additionally if feasible to reposition a bathroom. An almost complete remodel of a space creating a modern open space. I am in Johannesburg currently but have taken good videos to send via WhatsApp of the project.

We have a small bathroom in our flat. We are considering two different renovations. Option A: We would like to fix the floor for the shower so the water drains properly and doesn't get the whole bathroom wet. We would like to replace the glass door, add a tile backsplash for the shower area and update the flooring to either tile or cemcrete (leaning cemcrete). Option B: We would like to knock out the hall closet and make the bathroom bigger. This would allow us to change the layout of the bathroom. I attached an example I saw online. We would like the shower, toilet, and sink to be on the left wall. The shower would be at back, toliet in the middle, with sink at the end. I think this would create a better flow to the bathroom and open it up. Right now you almost walk into the sink. With this option, we would also like to replace the toilet and sink, in addition to upgrading the floor and adding a backsplash. I also like the slight step-up for the shower as shown in the example I attached. We would like to discuss both options. The main issue with the bathroom is the water does not drain nicely and we do not want it to damage the wooden floor outside the bathroom.
