Most tilers in South Africa charge R180 – R320 per m² for floors and R220 – R380 per m² for walls, with a call-out or minimum of about R350 – R650 for small jobs. Large-format or mosaic work runs R300 – R600 per m², and shower waterproofing adds R2,000 – R4,500. Those are labour figures only; tiles at R150 – R900+ per m² are quoted separately.

Buying your own tiles gives you control over the look and lets you shop sales, but you carry the risk of short orders and mismatched batches. A tiler who supplies often gets trade pricing and takes responsibility for quantities. Either way, order 10 – 15% extra for cuts and breakages and check every box carries the same batch and shade number.

A standard bathroom strip-and-retile takes four to six working days once the old tiles are off, allowing for screed, waterproofing and grout to cure. A kitchen floor is often two to three days if the room is cleared. Add a day or two for large-format tiles, intricate patterns or if the screed underneath needs repairing first.

Tiling over old tiles is possible where the existing floor is sound, level and well bonded, using a proper primer and a flexible adhesive. It saves rubble and days of labour, but raises the floor height, which affects doors, thresholds and plumbing fittings. If more than a few tiles sound hollow, removal is the safer route.
