Labour-only paving runs roughly R100 to R300 per m², with most pavers landing around R200. Installed with standard paving bricks, sand and cement you are looking at R400 to R700 per m², and premium cobbles, clay or large-format pavers climb to R700 to R1,200 or more. Materials are quoted separately from labour, so ask for the split.

A rough m² figure, a few photos of the area and a note on access are enough for a sensible estimate. Mention whether old paving or lawn needs to come out, and whether cars will drive on it, because both change the base work. A site visit before you commit is normal and worth insisting on.

Paving wins on looks, easy repairs and drainage, because a lifted paver can be relaid while a cracked slab is there for good. Concrete is cheaper per m² for plain driveways and tar suits long rural runs. For most South African homes paving is the practical middle ground, provided the base is done properly.

Sinking almost always traces back to the base rather than the bricks: thin or poorly compacted fill, water washing fines out, or a leaking pipe underneath. A good paver lifts the affected section, rebuilds and compacts the base, then relays the same pavers. If the whole area is dipping, the base was never adequate.
