For Midrand homes labour-only paving costs roughly R100 to R300 per m², commonly about R200. Installed with standard paving bricks, sand and cement it works out to R400 to R700 per m², and cobbles, clay or large-format pavers run R700 to R1,200 or more. Midrand sits on clay that swells and shrinks with the seasons, and many developer-spec complexes were paved on a thin, lightly compacted base to save cost. The result is dips and heaves within a few years. A proper repair rebuilds the base in layers with a plate compactor, which is where the money should go.

It does, because pavers only hold together as a surface when the outer rows are restrained. Without a concrete haunch or kerb the edge rows drift, joints open and sand washes out, and the problem spreads inward. Edging costs R120 to R250 per running metre and is the cheapest part of the job to get right.

Sometimes, if the range is still made, though the colour of the new bricks will be brighter than the weathered ones for a season or two. When the range is discontinued, a paver can suggest a close match or lay a contrasting border so the join looks deliberate. Bring a loose paver to the supplier if you can.
