Geyser installation in South Africa – gas and solar – is a job that’s best left to the pros. Especially because a burst or leaking geyser could cause hundreds of thousands in damages to your property. When pros give you an installation price estimate they typically charge a flat fee that includes both the cost of the unit and the labor required to install the new water heater and handle plumbing and gas line needs. However, the geyser installation price in South Africa will be a lot more if the job is more complicated. For example, if you’re installing a geyser in a newly constructed home, the job could cost more because the plumbing work required involves running new pipes.

Factors Affecting The Geyser Installation Price in South Africa

There are three main factors that can affect the geyser installation prices in South Africa for both gas and solar.

The size of the geyser

You can get various sizes of geysers, 50L, 100L, 150L, 200L and 250L are the most commonly available geyser sizes. Of course, the bigger the geyser is, the more it will cost BUT the cost to install a geyser is also directly impacted by the size of the geyser. A 50L geyser for example is much smaller and lighter making it easier to transport and of course install. A 250L geyser requires a lot more planning and manpower to move, transport and actually install. That is why the price to install a 50L geyser is sometimes less than the cost of installing a 250L geyser.

Access to the geyser

If the geyser is located in an easily accessible area such as a garage or ceiling then the plumber will not require as many hours of labour to install the geyser. This will bring down the cost quite a bit. However, if the geyser is in a difficult to reach place and requires having to chop ceiling panels to get access or require safety harness equipment then the geyser installation price will be much more. In addition, if the plumber has to carry the geyser up multiple flights of stairs they may also charge extra for this.

Additional requirements

If you wish to change the style or size of the geyser then the plumber may need to perform extra work. For example, if you want to install a 200L geyser instead of a 50L geyser the plumber might have to build extra frames to support the geyser. They may also need new connection points and other materials to ensure that it works.

Signs That You May Need A New Geyser

Over time, geysers corrode and without proper maintenance, the wear-and-tear happens a lot faster and can be more devastating. Luckily for you, you can avoid the stress of that situation by watching out for the following warning signs:

Water is rusty – If there is visible rust in water, this could mean there is rust inside the tank. The thing with rust or corrosion is that once it starts it cannot be reversed. It is only a matter of time before the rust damages the tank, making it leak.

Water isn’t getting hot – If water isn’t as hot as it used to be, or isn’t hot at all, then there is most likely a problem with the element.  If the geyser is quite old then it’s probably better to install a new geyser instead of repairing the element.

Leaks – A leaking geyser is often caused by an internal problem. If you notice your geyser leaking – call a plumber immediately. But, before you replace the geyser, check if there are other leaks coming from the fittings or connections to the tank. If the leak is severe enough, you’ll need to install a new geyser.

Geyser age – The older the geyser, the more likely it is to burst. If your geyser is over 10 years old you should definitely keep an eye on it.
