He knows his work so well that he was able to pick up faults in previous installations and even suggest and create solutions for problems encountered on the way (eg created a fitting that fixed flickering LED lights). He is calm and does his work meticulously. The only delay was due to a lot of back-and-forth with the light shop issuing him the incorrect order. All in all he made a plan and got the job done well!

What’s the difference between an electrical contractor and an electrician?
- Simply put, an electrician is the individual and the electrical contractor is the company that employs one or more electricians. In South Africa, the terms are often used interchangeably.
When should you get an electrical contractor?
- Electrical contractors can issue certificates of compliance for homes or electric fences.
- Electrical contractors can help you with breakers that trip or fuses that blow often.
- Installing lights, plugs, switches, extractor fans, power breakers, DV boxes, or power boards are best done by electrical contractors. Faulty electrical installations pose a serious risk to your home.
- If you have any plugs or switches that are warm to the touch or emit small shocks, call out an electrician to have it assessed as soon as possible. This may be a sign of faulty wiring or overloading and could lead to fires or serious damage if left unattended.
Does an electrical contractor or electrician have to be registered?
- By law, electricians need to be registered with the Department of Labour.
- To register as an electrical contractor, you need to pass an NQF level 3 electrical engineering course, obtain a wireman’s license and pass a national exam.
